American singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves will be appearing at The Continental in Preston as part of his latest European tour.

The Washington DC-born artist is already familiar with life on this side of the Atlantic, having spent some of his college life in Cork, Ireland.

In fact it was there, in 1985, that his music career really began – as a busker on the city’s streets.

After several false starts it was 1990 before Slaid, who now lives with is wife in Austin, Texas, released his debut cassette, The Promise.

The following year he and band The Moxie Men, with Slaid on lead vocals and acoustic
guitar, recorded Looks Good from the Road.

And this was enough to prompts critics to tip them as the ones to watch.

But by 1991 Slaid’s solo career was taking off, and in 1992 he won a prestigious folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival; previous winners include Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith.

Since then he has focussed on his writing and touring, with a number of albums to his name, including the chart hit Broke Down.

Slaid will appear at The Continental from 8pm on Saturday, October 5.

Tickets are £14 in advance from www.newcontinental.net or £16 on the door.
