A unique east London take on the traditional brass band is to brave a trip north later this month.

The Hackney Colliery Band formed in 2008 and features trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and marching percussion.

Band members are from hugely diverse musical backgrounds, ranging from work with cutting edge jazz groups to the Royal Opera House, from backing Jarvis Cocker to playing in major international orchestras.

Mining nuggets of funk, hip-hop and high-octane rock from the musical coalface and throwing in a few chunks of Balkan brass, ska and conte mporary jazz for good measure, the band are liable to yet able to blow the roof off any room!

The band play three dates in the North West – The Forum in Barrow-In-Furness on November 21 (01229 820000), Clitheroe Grand on November 28 (01200 421599) and Manchester Band on the Wall, November 29 (0161 834 1786).
