On a wet and grey Saturday afternoon, my boyfriend and I decided to visit Birkacre Nurseries And Garden Centre to look around the Christmas displays and try out the food at Camerons Restaurant.
The restaurant is award-winning and the photographs of dishes on their website looked amazing.
We walked through the garden centre to the restaurant where the first thing I saw was lots of fresh cakes at the counter.
As someone with a sweet tooth, I was already looking forward to choosing my dessert.
The restaurant was light, with lots of windows, and similar to a conservatory.
The heavy rain and hailstones on the glass were very noisy, but didn’t take away from the atmosphere, especially as we were indoors away from the elements.
We were spoilt for choice on the menu.
I chose the open sirloin beef sandwich with chips and gravy (£10.95), while my boyfriend ordered the seafood platter (£16.95).
When I ordered, I was told there was no sirloin steak but I could have rump instead.
We ordered drinks – a large hot chocolate (£2.60) for me and a pot of tea for my boyfriend (£1.95) – and enjoyed them while we waited for the meal.
It took about 20 minutes for the food to come and we were impressed when it did.
Both meals were on large plates and the food was presented really well. The images on the website were definitely true to life.
My open steak sandwich was accompanied by only two chips, which was a bit disappointing, but there were also roast potatoes, mushrooms, a side salad and a jug of gravy.
I’d asked for the steak to be medium and it was cooked just right.
The chips and potatoes were delicious, crispy on the outside and soft inside.
The side salad was not the usual limp lettuce leaves – it contained green leaves, olives, grapes and strawberries, which was definitely an interesting combination.
The seafood platter was salmon, king prawns and scallops, along with a side salad and a prawn cocktail.
My boyfriend was pleased with the size of the portion and enjoyed the different flavours and textures.
He particularly enjoyed the salmon and was intrigued by the unusual salad.
We were already feeling quite full after the meal, but couldn’t resist the appetising cakes on display.
I went for the lemon drizzle cake (£2.95), which was soft and tangy, and my boyfriend loved the pecan pie (£2.95).
We had more drinks as we ate our cakes.
We both really enjoyed the meals and were pleasantly surprised that the food was so good.
A garden centre might not be the obvious choice for a great meal, but the food was amazing.
We enjoyed getting into the Christmas spirit, with trees and decorations all around the garden centre, and I expect it would be just as nice to sit outside and eat cake in the sunshine too.
We will definitely be back to Camerons to find out.
The total bill was £42.90, including the drinks.
