For those who fancy escaping the Christmas season, this thrilling production of Sweeney Todd should be a suitable antidote to the cheery festive fare.

The Lancaster University Theatre Group takes over the campus’s Nuffield Theatre from today until Sunday with their version of the dark tale of The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Taken from the hit novel by Hugh Wheeler, the music and lyrics were added by the musical genius Stephen Sondheim to turn this drama into what is now widely considered to be his ultimate masterpiece.

The university’s resident theatre group present their full scale production of this Broadway and West End smash hit in conjuction with Live At LICA.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tells the story of a man who is hell bent on revenge after being imprisoned on a trumped up charge by a jealous and corrupt judge.

The furious Benjamin Barker – now known as Sweeney Todd – returns to London and vows vengeance on the man who stole his daughter from him and
ruined his life.

But, as the body count begins to rise at his barber’s shop, he forms a dreadful alliance with landlady, Mrs Lovett.

She manages to come up with a gruesome, yet tasty, idea of what to do with the earthly remains of those unfortunate enough to get in the Demon Barber’s way.

There are three evening performances of this great musical production, each starting at 7.30pm, running from tonight until Sunday.

Tickets for the show, which is aimed at those aged 14 and over, are still on sale, priced at £7 or £9 for adults.

Students and concessions rates are also available. Book tickets for all three shows by calling the box office on 01524 594151 or emailing boxoffice@liveatlica.org.
