Burlesque empowers – now it’s boy-lesque

A show mingling burlesque and cult sci-fi film Star Wars sounds like an odd concoction created in a 15-year-old boy’s dream factory.

But Corset’s ‘N’ Cosplay – the University of Central Lancashire’s Burlesque society’s latest masterpiece – is yet another form of female, and male, body empowerment.

Hannah Jackson Club treasurer will perform as alter-ego Crystal Nightshade tonight and believes the comic book geek theme is not that unusual and will be a hit with the audience.

She said: “There is a Star Wars-themed burlesque show in Australia and some similar themed shows are being performed in America.

“Burlesque is still growing and more people are becoming aware of it.

“We always pick a theme the group can be creative with and everyone has embraced it, the show has everything from the Mario brothers to Transformers.”

The show is the last outing for some members of the society and 20-year-old Film Production third year student Hannah’s final show.

And she has urged students to put down their revision for a night and sample their seductive, self-esteem boosting production.

She said: “This is our last production of the year and we want to go out with a bang.

“Hopefully we can draw a bigger crowd – at our last movie themed production in January we had over a hundred people watching.

“That was the society’s biggest crowd ever and we are hoping to beat that figure tonight.”
