The Fast and Furious at 20mph on Prom

You've seen the movies. Now meet the cars. Better still, watch them raise money for Blackpool's best known charity.

Steve Fawcett, managing director of Scene, the big screen exhibition running at the Winter Gardens until the end of this month, is bringing the magic of the movies to Blackpool Promenade too.

He’s organising a convoy of iconic cars to parade along the seafront on Friday night starting at Starr Gate at 7pm before parking up at the Comedy Carpet for pictures opposite the Tower and a collection by all the drivers in aid of Brian House, at Trinity the Hospice in the Fylde.

The Yorkshire hospital worker says his visit to Brian House was the first time he’d seen the work involved in a children’s hospice.

“It was very moving,” he explains. “You ask yourself how far the money will go - but even £20 will buy a memory box for parents at the end of their child’s journey.”

Steve’s got the support of 30 other owners of movie cars, many built to resemble the stars of the big, or small, screen. The enthusiast is the official supplier of the Knight Rider Kitt car regularly used by David Hasselhoff, described as the “most down to earth celebrity I’ve ever met.”

Steve explains: “It costs about £3k for the car, a Pontiac Transam, and £20k to turn it into Kitt!

“I’ve had mine since 2004 but the work is never finished. By far the greatest problem is rust, they were built for Los Angeles, not Blackpool. Mine’s rust free and goes out daily. It causes a real stir when I drive it to work.”

The Scene exhibition features replica sets, props and vehicles including Kitt, Star Wars Speeder bike and a Back to the Future DeLorean.

Friday’s procession includes replica Knight Rider cars, an A Team van, Lightning McQueen, four Fast and Furious cars, Mad Max vehicles and a Del Boy green Capri, complete with Batman and Robin, along with more.

“We’d love an Aston Martin but those are worth £1m but my dream car would be Herbie. It defined my childhood - I loved that car.”

As for the speed along the Prom? Just 20mph. And they’re not allowed to put the lights on the American police car...
