For history buffs, the National Trust has got lots of events on at their properties across the north west.

This year is the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

The celebrate, the Trust’s stately home at Lyme Park, near Stockport, Cheshire is hosting an array of events and activities.

Discover the travelling exhibition on loan from Jane Austen’s House Museum, see original costumes from the BBC adaptation – filmed at Lyme Park, which stood in for Mr Darcy’s country sea, Pemberley – and visit the lake where Darcy (played by Colin Firth) famously swam.

There will also be contemporary artwork with a Pemberley flavour on display, while you can take in the locations used for filming on a guided walk.

Each yea,r old Christmas trees are recycled in a unique way at the National Trust’s land at Formby.

Bring your cut Christmas trees to Formby and plant them with the rangers or leave them there. Either way, you are helping to stabilise the dunes in the battle against erosion.

You can work off those pigs in blankets and mince pies with a guided walk at the picturesque Sizergh Castle estate, just off the M6, junction 36, on the A590.

The winter walk, on Saturday, January 4, will take in the spectacular panoramic views from the heights of the Sizergh estate, a perfect way to welcome the new year.

Meanwhile, until January 3, you can make your own ‘thank you’ card, inspired by the Victorian era, at Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate, near Wilmslow.
