Let’s twist again

Wayne, Gerardine and Jack Hemingway are adding a musical weekend to their fashion extravaganza on September 6/7 in Morecambe.

There will be DJ sets from Mike Pickering and Dave Haslam at the Warehouse as part of a multi-venue celebration of Northern Musical heritage that will span several decades.

From 9pm-2am on Saturday, September 6, Morecambe’s Winter Gardens will play host to the Warehouse which will celebrate the North’s distinctive dance culture.

The Hemingway’s son Jack will be warming things with a selection of pre-rave Boogie and House jams.

Then the Hacienda legends will re-kindle memories of the Acid House era in Manchester.

Pickering, who signed the Happy Mondays during his time at Factory Records, was also a DJ at the famous Hacienda club and later founded M People.

He said: “I have DJd at a couple of soul weekenders in the north and at the Vintage Festival in London a couple of years ago and I loved it.”

On Saturday, September 6 The Torch Club hosts an unforgettable night of 1930s and 1940s glamour at the Midland Hotel.

Hosted by cheeky chappie Viv the Spiv, guests will enjoy champagne and strawberries on arrival followed by a four-course dinner, before fox trotting the night away to the Savoy Dance Orchestra.

On Sunday, September 7 The Soul Casino will take over the Winter Gardens (9pm-2am) as Richard Searling curates a session dedicated to the sounds and style of Soul with DJs covering classic 70s and 80s disco, deep funk to northern, rare groove to classic soul, disco and authentic R&B mod sounds.

And over at the Platform in Morecambe on Sunday 7 (7.30pm-1am) Poor Boy Paul will be hosting Let it Rock a celebration of the best of 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Bands will include The Crown Top Kings, The Hayriders and the Rhythm Kings with Poor Boy Paul spinning a vinyl-only selection of RnB and shuffling rhythms and providing some expert lessons in Jive and Rock ‘n’ Roll dance tuition – don’t forget your blue suede shoes!

Wayne said: “The North has an amazingly varied musical heritage and so many of its fantastically talented name will be visiting us at the Festival and putting on the musical celebrations at different venues across the town to chart everything that was great about the 30s through to the 80s.

“We want people to come along and lose themselves in the wonderfully evocative music, fashion, kids activities beauty, film, art, design and cocktails and food that we have planned and the Vintage team can’t wait to put our dancing shoes on!”
