Local lads with a pocketful of blues

All of them are classy, veteran musicians.

Fronting the band on exceptional vocals was John Scarlett, with Paul Rivans on guitar, John Winder on keys with a full Hammond sound, Mark O’Connor on pounding bass and Roy Dennett, keeping that rhythm going on drums.

It was a brilliant opener with an interesting intro on John Lee Hooker’s Burning Hell, with superb vocals and musicianship that set the scene for the evening.

Following this with some 60s classics from Spencer Davies and Cream, they moved on to a number from the British Blues Award winners King King, with a fully endorsed cover of What Am I Supposed To Do.

Paul provided a great guitar solo with John giving a superb vocal performance.

A mix of music to follow with Joss Stones’ Karma, the Eagles’ Somebody and Jack Bruce’s Neighbour Neighbour, with bass man Mark working extremely hard.

Then there was I Put A Spell On You and a great take of Robert Cray’s Playing In The Dirt, before finishing off the great first set with Seesaw, including a bit of audience participation.

The second set was equally varied, kicking off with Homework, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Crossfire, then a funky take on Deep Purple’s Never Before. Some more class Robert Cray, Bobby Bland and Buddy Guy, before another from King King, One More Time Around, all with a bit more of a soul feel.

The final number was a brilliant version of Neil Young’s Rocking In The Free World, with a well deserved encore of Joe Cocker’s defining take on A Little Help From My Friends.

Despite this being only their second gig, Fogpocket gave us a full on sound with an interesting and varied covers set list, and hope to have their own material soon.

Let’s hope we see this band out and about on the circuit, as they can offer something a little bit different from the norm. Excellent.
