Organisers of ‘Passion for Opera’ at St Leonard’s claim it is a first for the church.

Keen for new fund-raising ideas, choirmaster and organist David Cookson and churchwarden Philip Walsh approached their friend Nick Sales – who is also the tenor with the Heritage Opera Company.

Philip said: “We now stage several music events a year and we are gradually creating a following of people who appreciate good music.

“We’ve hosted a Frank Sinatra Tribute Act, Penwortham Youth Music Festival, Penwortham Live and now Heritage Opera.

“This is the most ambitious concert we have yet staged as the artistes are professional singers.”

Soprano Sarah Helsby-Hughes and tenor Nicholas Sales, right, will narrate their way through a fabulous tour of the operatic and musical theatre world, taking in Mozart, Bizet, Gounod, Verdi, Gershwin, Puccini, Gilbert and Sullivan, Rossini, Lloyd Webber and Rogers and Hammerstein along the way.
