Royal victory: Last years winners, New Generation, parade on Prestons Flagmarket following their victory

The choosing and crowning of the King and Queen of our annual Caribbean Carnival goes ahead on the city’s Flagmarket from 12 noon until 3.30pm, in preparation for the May Bank Holiday extravaganza itself.

All the carnival bands who will be appearing on the day put forward two of their leading members to stand for the honour.

Last year’s crown was won by New Generation (pictured above) who impressed with their amazing Magic Under the Sea theme - featuring the Queen riding in a dramatic and elaborate clamshell.

This year’s costumes and performances are expected to be even more spectacular.

The King and Queen is a traditional foretaste for the people of Preston of what their Caribbean Carnival organisers and stars have in store for the crowds this year.

Each of the nominated leaders battle it out for the prestigious accolade of becoming Preston Caribbean Carnival’s King and Queen.

To win through, each of the couples have to answer questions from the judges about their costumes for this year and the theme they have adopted. And, of course, they have to show off their dance skills to the crowds, convincing us that they will be able to wow their audience on the big day itself.

And after their crowning, the winning King and Queen will then lead their band along the procession route for a celebratory lap of honour.

Preston’s Caribbean Carnival goes ahead on Sunday May 26, through city streets and ending on Moor Park.
