Snakes alive in the city

A colourful cobra and dancing dragons will head the exotic spectacle of Preston’s Caribbean Carnival on Sunday.

Keith Powell and Julia Russell, both from the Isles of Harmony dance troupe, won this year’s contest to be carnival king and queen and lead the parade in its 40th year.

Competition was fierce for pride of place in the spectacular event, which brings Caribbean floats from as far away as Leeds and Nottingham.

At least 5,000 spectators are expected.

Carnival chairman Michael Dawkins said: “Carnival is fun, loud and exotic.

“The Caribbean and African beats transport you to the tropics, to sunshine, golden beaches and warm blue seas.

“We have pulled out all the stops for our 40th anniversary and we are inviting everyone from the community of Preston and beyond to come along and celebrate.”

Spectrum Association and Rainbow Association came joint second in the King and Queen Competition, with Ablaze Youth Group third.

The event receives significant support from Arts Council England, with local sponsors including Community Gateway Association, Jalgos Sports Club and accountants McDade Roberts.

The carnival takes to the road on Sunday, leaving Moor Park at noon to wind its way through the city centre.

As well as the parade, there are family-orientated activities on Moor Park from noon, including children’s arts, acoustic entertainment and great acts on the main stage.

And, of course, plenty of exotic food.
