Strings stars’ family ties

Special guests, siblings Mari and Håkon Samuelsen join the Phil at their second home of Preston Guild Hall, to star as soloists at their 
latest concert on Tuesday, May 14.

The highlight of the night will be the orchestra’s performance of the full suite of Edward Elgar’s famous Enigma Variations – including Nimrod, which is one of this nation’s most instantly recognisable classical pieces.

Inspired by a single phrase which the composer’s wife told him she liked, Elgar 
began playing endless 
variations on this theme, 
dedicating each of the resulting 14 pieces to one of his most intimate friends.

Conducted by Alexander Shelley, the son of famous conductor Howard Shelley, the concert programme will also feature Richard Strauss’s testosterone charged tribute to the world’s greatest lover, Don Juan.

And the Samuelsens - with Mari on violin and Håkon on cello – will add their 
extraordinary talents to the orchestra’s interpretation of the Brahms Double Concerto.

The remarkable rise of the Norweigan brother and sister saw Liverpool Philharmonic’s scouts book them to play this concert as long as two years ago.

Doubtless, one factor was the duo’s acclaimed performances of the same piece they play at the Guild Hall, two years ago in Milan with I Pomeriggi Musicali which won them immediate re-invitations for both last year and this year’s seasons.
