The quality of the performance by St Annes Operatic and Dramatic Society is exceptional in this Noel Gay 1937 musical where the book has been wittily revised by Stephen Fry.

Michael Cosgrove and Danielle Wrench are first-class in every aspect as Bill and Sally, their Cockney accents and vitality perfect. Their comic timing is immaculate as they misremember English history in one very funny scene.

Leo and Jeanette Appleton, Neil and Joanne James, Don Green and Len Hampson all combine excellent singing with stage presence and the principals are backed up by an energetic and very well drilled chorus. Sarah Cosgrove’s choreography, Peter Weston’s orchestra, Trevor Stone’s production and Janet Radcliffe’s dressing, allied to an impressive cast and the tunefulness of Noel Gay’s whole score, ensure that the show is very much more than The Lambeth Walk. A large opening night audience loved it.
