The car boot sale based in fields near Botany Bay, next to the M61 motorway in Chorley has been a popular Sunday destination for bargain hunters across the North West for nearly 30 years.

But the land has now been leased to a new tenant, leaving its organisers with no option but to discontinue the weekly event.

A post on its Facebook page said: "It is with great disappointment that we are announcing the discontinuation of Elaine's Car Boot sale.

"Over the last 28 years Elaine's Car Boot sale has been one of the biggest car boot sales in the North West, and we are so thankful to each and every one of you for your support.

"Whether you just came for the day out or were a regular seller, we thank you for attending over the years.

"Unfortunately, the land has been leased to another person, and so continuation of the car boot will not occur.

"Elaine would like to thank everyone who worked on the car boot and all the sellers and buyers who brought the car boot to life.

"Thank you for taking the time out of your day to join us."
