This picture is one of those among the eight miles of irreplaceable historical documents at the Lancashire Archives in Preston.

Sport features heavily in the archives which is no suprise, as it has always been a really important part of people’s leisure time, a chance to have a laugh, to let off steam and, hopefully, win at something.

Our picture, reproduced by permission of Lancashire Archives, shows the old girls’ hockey team from Balshaw Grammar School in 1937.

You can help ensure future generations understand the importance of sport in the county’s’s history by getting in touch with Lancashire Archives. It wants to hear from clubs or individuals who might be interested in depositing archives – such as minute books, accounts, letters and photographs.

The service is free and depositors can retain ownership of their archives. Email:, or ring 01772 533039.
