Chorley Council says it has no alternative but to cancel A Taste of Chorley and the Picnic in the Park, which were both due to take place in June.

A statement from the council said the events will not take place “out of consideration for the health of attendees, exhibitors and staff”.

The council added that they had kept the events under review, but “latest government announcements on social distancing and isolating left no alternative but to cancel them”.

The statement added that this year’s Chorley Flower Show, due to take place in Astley Park in August, is still currently under review.

Coun Alistair Bradley, leader of Chorley Council, said: “It’s really disappointing that we’ve had to cancel more events due to the current situation. People have worked so hard to organise these events and local businesses rely on these events as a source of income, however the health of visitors and everyone involved remains a priority.”

The two-day A Taste of Chorley food festival usually attracts more than 40 food and drink traders who, along with town centre businesses, offer a variety of locally produced cuisines. The event usually features a schedule of cooking demonstrations and competitions.

The Picnic in the Park events usually sees families and friends pack up a picnic and flock to Astley Park for an afternoon of free fun and entertainment, however this year they are encouraged to do this within their own homes or gardens.

Coun Bradley said: “While we have cancelled these two events, we are looking at options for an event when we can all get together again and elements from both the events will be a part of that to give people something to enjoy and support the local economy.”
