There only seems to be one topic of conversation in our house at the minute - weddings!

And no, we’re not talking about Wills and Kate and the Royal Wedding or THAT amazing Sarah Burton dress, but instead our impending nuptials at Rivington Barn in August.

It might only be one day (as everyone keeps reminding us at every opportunity), but that one day is completely taking over our lives, not that I’m complaining!

It also means that every last penny we have is spoken for (especially when you’re desperate for a light up dance floor and string quartet), but with it being my lovely fiance Rob’s birthday I decided a treat was in store.

After all, there is only so much talk of tiaras, flowers and hymns that one man can put up with!

We decided that as it was a special occasion, we would venture out of our home town of Darwen and pop along to one of our all-time favourite haunts - Alghero’s, in Bolton Road, Withnell.

We also invited along our best man Maz and his lovely fiancee Jenny, and we were in high spirits as we clambered out of the car and into the restaurant.

It’s fair to say that it’s the quietest we have ever seen it, but it was Easter Sunday and the sun had been shinning all day.

In fact it was almost too nice to be stuck indoors and we were happy when we bagged a table in the conservatory.

The staff were straight over to us and we ordered a round of drinks, including pints of lager for the boys, a large glass of rose for Jenny and a large Diet Coke for me (as designated driver for the night).

We sat and pondered the menu and the eager waiter was back in a flash to take our order.

We had to ask for a little more time, despite the fact that I knew what I was having before I had even walked through the door, and in the end opted for a main course only.

We did, however break our hen and stag party diets and ordered a garlic bread and a second with cheese to put us on until the mains arrived. Desserts were a completely no-go though.

The cheese option was delicious and the plate was soon empty, but the plain one was a tad too dry - not to say that we didn’t enjoy it all the same.

Our mains arrived soon after - spaghetti bolognaise for me, lasagne for Jen, penne carbonara for Maz and a pepperoni pizza for the birthday boy.

Jen’s portion of lasagne looked almost lost when it arrived in a large dish. She was a little dubious at first, but assured us that it was tasty none the less.

Maz seemed content with his pasta dish too, but my future husband was a little disappointed with his pizza and the spag bol, although good, wasn’t much to write home about either.

I don’t know whether we just had too high of expectations because we have always had such good food at Alghero’s, but something just seemed a little lacking.

There was a lack of atmosphere because the restaurant was quiet and we felt just a little rushed, which was strange seeing as the other tables were empty.

Our bill came to £61.95 in total which wasn’t too bad, especially as the lads had quite a lot to drink.

I’m sure we’ll be back soon to give it another try.
