Winners, Isles in Harmony, wowed the judges at Preston’s flag market on Sunday, to bag a spot leading the city’s annual celebration of Caribbean Culture next Sunday.

Their impressive hummingbird and floral constructions impressed the judges, pipping runners-up Rainbow and third-placed Spectrum to the top spot.

The event saw crowds of onlookers pour into the city centre on Sunday afternoon after the event was rescheduled from its rain hit slot on Saturday. Leeroy Allen, events and entertainments co-ordinator for the event, said: “The artists have worked so hard from the beginning of the year to construct the costumes.

“Some of the constructions were started in February ahead of the main carnival.”

The king and queen winners will lead the procession from Moor Park on Sunday at noon, winding around Deepdale and Preston city centre before ending up back where it began at 4pm.

After the main event on Sunday, which includes live performances from Preston’s Carlie Brooke and headliner Triniboi – all the way from Barbados – The Preston Caribbean Carnival committee will host an official after-party at Jalgo’s Sports and Social Club, Rose Street, Preston, from 10pm until 4am.

Tickets are priced at £7 and available from www.

Leeroy said: “This year’s celebrations will be broadcast live online at www.guildradio.tv so that people around the world can still be involved in Preston’s celebrations.”

And the organisers are already looking forward to next year’s event.

Leeroy added: “As next year is the 40th year of the carnival, we are looking for sponsors to get involved in the biggest celebration we have ever had.

“We have a very strong committee headed by our chairman Peter Stewart, who puts in an incredible amount of work.”
