A new 26-bedroom boutique hotel in the Chorley countryside is on track for opening this summer.

The £2m project at the Oak Royal Golf Club, Bury Lane, Withnell is being be bolted on to the existing clubhouse which opened in 2007.

Charles Downes, head of Hoghton Leisure Ltd and Alder Construction, said: “It’s being built to AA- registered four-star standards, and the only reason we can’t do five star is we can’t get a pool. But it will be five star catering.”

Mr Downes said, with the venue nestling on the edge of the Pennines and within just a minute of junction three of the M65, it was a perfect place to stay.

“People that want to come and play golf here want to stay for weekend breaks.

“We’re central to everything, Manchester’s 30 minutes away, the Lakes 40, Birmingham an hour-and-a-half.

“That junction three really put us on the map.”

Mr Downes said a celebrity would be brought in to open the new extension, which is expected to be up and running in June.

He said: “When we opened the course eight years ago, we had the chief executive of the PGA and had the Ryder Cup here for a day.

“We had our first pro-am last year, and he came back and brought the Ryder Cup again.

“There are seven bridge on the course, all to be endorsed by famous golfers and we’ll announce two on the opening day.”

Former Liverpool and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish is a life member at the nine-hole course.

Mr Downes said: “The greens are USGA standard which means they are playable throughout the year so we expect our hotel guests to take advantage of our stay-and-play packages.

“Our research indicated that this is a prime area for a hotel with the M65 and M61 literally down the road.

“We are also anticipating a mixture of business people, week-end breakers and groups using our function suites for weddings and such.”

Meanwhile, chef patron Simeon Stuttard, said the development was not affecting the restaurant/function room’s opening hours.

“It’s business as usual for us while the hotel extension work continues,” he said. “We want to assure our customers that there is no change in the service we provide.”
