POLICE are appealing for witnesses following the death of a 16 year old boy as a result of a road traffic collision on the M61 earlier today.

At around 9:48am this morning, police received reports that someone had been hit by a HGV on the northbound carriageway near to the Bolton West Services.

The boy was 16 years old and from the Horwich, near Bolton. He suffered serious injuries from which he sadly died at the scene.

Officers are seeking witnesses to the incident, and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a male wearing a grey tracksuit in and around the service area this morning and also in and around the surrounding roads and fields.

Inspector Damian Kitchen from Lancashire Police Force Roads Policing Unit said: “This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the young man’s family and friends. We are currently supporting the family with specially trained police officers.”

The road was closed for accident investigation for around two hours but is now fully re-open.
