A bouquet of barbed wire from dog owner Margaret

An apologetic council has agreed to cover the vet's bill for a pet dog badly gashed by barbed wire left in a public park.

And the pooch’s owner Margaret Lloyd will donate the cash – almost £70 – to her local church, despite being on a pension.

“I’ve got to admit I was very impressed by the attitude of South Ribble Council after I complained,” said Margaret, whose three-year-old Airedale Terrier Bella is now well on the road to a full recovery.

“I wasn’t after compensation when I reported it – I’m not that sort of person. I just wanted them to move the barbed wire so other dogs – and even children – weren’t put at risk.

“They did that straight away and then offered to cover the vet’s bill. So I’ve got to pay tribute to the council. They’ve been very good.”

Bella suffered a bad cut to one of her legs after getting tangled in a roll of spiked wire left by workmen on the King George V playing fields in Higher Walton near Preston.

Margaret paid £69.52 for treatment at her local vet’s surgery and angrily complained to South Ribble who manage the park. Now the council has said “sorry” and agreed to recompense her.

“I’m going to donate it to St Aidan’s Church in Bamber Bridge where I go every Sunday,” explained Margaret.

“Bella is doing very well. She’s back to running around the playing fields with my other two dogs as if nothing happened, even though it must have been a very scary experience for her getting caught up in barbed wire.

“We go on there every day and thankfully the contractors have left now and there aren’t any more hazards that can injure dogs or children. I’m sure it was just an oversight on their part at the time.”
