A woman who died in a Chorley canal has been named.

Marion Bateson, of Windermere Drive, Adlington, was discovered in a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal on Wednesday.

Police cordoned off the canal, near to Harrison Road in Adlington, at around 12.37pm after being alerted by a member of the public.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Ms Bateson is believed to be in her 60s.

A number of police were at the scene on Wednesday while they carried out enquiries and were turning walkers away.

One walker, who asked not to be named, said at the time: “I was just told to turn back from my walk on the canal by police who said there had been an incident.”
