Car bursts into flames after ploughing through fence and flipping onto roof in Chorley crash

A car ploughed through a fence, flipped onto its roof and then burst into flames following a crash in Chorley.

Two fire engines from Chorley attended the scene in Birkacre Road at around 3.45pm yesterday (April 28).

The car, which narrowly avoided the River Yarrow, hurtled through a fence before setting alight near Birkacre Garden Centre.

Shocking pictures from the scene show firefighters using a ladder to reach the vehicle - which was extinguished before crews arrived.

"Thankfully all persons were free from the vehicle when firefighters arrived," a spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said.

"Four people were assessed by paramedics at the scene, two of which were taken to hospital."

Tom Powell, Acting Group Manager at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said the occupants of the car were "very lucky...to escape without serious injury".

Fire crews were at the scene for around one hour.
