Bowlers are celebrating as one of the area’s oldest club’s celebrates its centenary year.

Members of St Bede’s Bowling Club, on Brownley Street, Clayton-le-Woods, have been working hard to save their green, in time for the special anniversary.

Over the past three years, money has been raised to stop the green from deteriorating, following a campaign launched by the acting secretary Lisa Shacklady.

And now, thanks to members’ donations it is looking as healthy as ever, in time for the new season at the start of April.

Eddie Salisbury, who is part of the Churches A Team, said: “It was realised that the green was in desperate need of urgent action.

“This is because of the problems that beset all greens after a period of time, such as drains, compacting and excess thatching.

“These problems had to be corrected or the green would continue to deteriorate.

“Now the green has been transformed back to its former glory.

“The Greenkeeper Alan Fielden, now tells us that the green will continue to improve.

“A big vote of thanks must go to Alan Fielden and Jack Bailey for all their outstanding work over the last two years – thanks lads.”

And Captain of the Churches A Team, John Edgerley, who has been a member of the club since around 1980, said: “The green is running better now than I can ever remember.

“People have really worked hard.”

As well as enjoying their sparkling new green, members will also be invited to take part in a celebratory competition.

Manageress of St Bedes Bowling Club, Jane Smith, said: “We’re going to be holding a big bowling competition during season, which I will be helping to organise.

“It’s quite an honour to be part of it.

“There will be a cash prize for first, second and third place. And there will be something on in the hall afterwards.

“I hope the centenary year will attract even more people to bowling, and other members of the club will get involved.” St Bede’s Bowling Club are always welcoming new members, of all ages.

The Club currently runs seven teams, six of which play for the Leyland and District, Chorley and District and Chorley Churches leagues.
