Conifer tree in Chorley's Astley Park could face the chop

Landowners Chorley Council announced that the tree is to face the chop as part of work to “improve the front of the landmark building and transform the visitor experience as part of its conservation plan”.

But one resident, who says she gave the tree to the authority about 45 years ago, says the felling it would be “heartless”.

Writing on facebook Lesley Holt said: “It is a memorial tree because my father’s ashes are interred at the base. When they felled the other trees some years ago they were going to do the same to this one but when I went to speak to them about it they decided not to. I think this is heartless.”

The council is preparing a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to help pay for the work and the dominating view of the tree is a concern.
