Fortunately, the family has a spare, but if this was to break, the family would be left in "real difficulties" police have said.

Officers are now appealing for residents to keep their eyes open for the feeding pump which may have been dumped in the local area.

A spokesman for South Ribble Police said: "This piece of equipment was stolen from a house in the Lostock Hall area.

"It's called a 'FreeGo' feeding pump and the owners use it to feed their disabled son. It's around 30cm by 30cm and costs a significant £5,000 to replace.

"The one stolen is a spare but if the existing machine they are using breaks or needs replacing the family could be in real difficulties.

"The equipment is very distinctive and has a number of serial numbers on it. Have you seen one dumped/discarded around Tardy Gate, maybe in the street or in your garden?

"Also, the thieves will be unable to sell it as it needs specialist cabling so if you are the person who stole it we'd urge you to do the right thing and find a way of returning it to the family."
