The burnt-out wreck of a Fiat Punto was found dumped on the playing fields, near Lea Road, on Sunday morning (January 31), where it appears to have smashed into rugby goal-posts.

The fire has also caused damage to the pitch. Repairs to the pitch and replacing the rugby goal is expected to cost hundreds of pounds.

Lancashire Police said the fire is "under investigation".

A UCLan spokesman added: "We are liaising with Lancashire Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in relation to this incident, which has caused damage to a grass pitch and a rugby goalpost.”

It is the latest car to be found torched on Preston's parks and playing fields.

On December 31, a Peugeot was found gutted by fire on the Eaves Brook footpath, near Brookfield Park in Holme Slack.

The abandoned vehicle had a Welsh registration plate and DVLA checks said it had been taxed and MOT'd until September 2021. It was recovered by the city council on January 8.

A week later, another car was found torched and dumped in the water at Eaves Brook, behind Sainsbury's in Deepdale.
