Fenn-type traps such as this have been illegal in the UK since April 2020, except when used solely for the purpose of trapping stoats.

It is not known whether it was placed on the path with malicious intent, but the route is popular with dog walkers and police have advised people to beware of other traps that might be hidden along the canal-side.

PCSO Michelle Appleton, of Chorley Police, said: "Please be aware that a vermin trap has been located behind the terrace houses on Chorley Old Road on the old canal path.

"This was covered by leaves in an area that people walk dogs. Please be vigilant and try to keep dogs on leads when walking in this area."

Coun Mark Clifford, who represents Whittle-le-Woods added: "The Council is working with the police on this. The setting of these traps is completely unacceptable."
