Samantha Thompson's son was struck at the mini-roundabout next to the train station, between Station Brow and Moss Lane, at 7.45pm last night (Thursday, March 18).

The driver of the car - which is believed to be a black Ford - reportedly drove away without stopping, leaving the boy injured in the road.

He has since been discharged and is continuing his recovery at home.

Police are investigating and reviewing CCTV in the area, but Samantha says the driver should "do the right thing" and "come forward".

She said: "It was so scary, the thought that someone could do that to a child. I just can't believe someone would not stop to check on my son.

"He could have been dead for all that driver knew?

"He is only 12-years-old and he's so upset and confused by it all. He doesn't understand why anyone would just leave him in the road like that.

"He's going to be OK, but he's very sore all over and the staff at the hospital said he is very lucky not to be seriously injured.

"I think the driver should do the right thing and come forward."

Lancashire Police say enquiries are underway to identify the driver and the force is asking anyone with information to get in touch.
