Council plans "deep clean" after human waste is dumped near Leyland Traveller site

Families and dog walkers were "shocked" and "disgusted" to find the human waste scattered on a footpath between Paradise Lane and Rhoden Road at the weekend.

Soiled baby wipes and toilet paper were also found discarded on the footpath, along with overflowing sacks of rubbish and empty gas canisters.

South Ribble Borough Council (SRBC) said they are aware of the unauthorised encampment in Paradise Lane, but said it is unable to take action to remove the group.

It said enforcement is the responsibility of Lancashire County Council, who own the land, and who are working with Lancashire Police to evict them.

But SRBC said it is responsible for cleansing and has provided black refuse sacks for the Travellers' waste. It said these are collected daily to help keep the site clear of waste.

It added that once the site has been vacated, cleansing teams will visit to carry out a "deep clean".

Councillor Aniela Bylinski Gelder said: "We are aware of travellers in Paradise Lane in Leyland. South Ribble Borough Council are responsible for keeping the site clear (of rubbish) and as such we have provided black sacks for refuse and have arranged daily collections.

"We are working closely with Lancashire County Council (the landowner), and the police on the matter and will arrange a deep clean of the area once the site has been cleared."

Lancashire County Council has been approached for comment.
