A Chorley pie maker has been handed a prestigious award in Melton Mowbray.
Staff at Bowen, based in Adlington, had their eyes on the pies when they put their chunky steak option up against competitors at the Annual British Pie Awards. They battled it out against 900 other pies, created by professional bakers and butchers, to secure a gold award in the beef class.
Owner Vince Bowen said: “We’re absolutely chuffed.
“Our secret for really good pies is in making them with locally-sourced beef and taking pride in our products.”
The pies were broken down into 18 classes and underwent a stringent judging process by 93 food experts and celebrity chefs, including Phil Vickery.
They scored the pies on a range of criteria including appearance, texture and taste of both filling and pastry.
Mr Bowen said: “It was just a case of driving down to Melton Mowbray, leaving the pies and waiting for the judges to decide. We were up against some stiff competition and to be recognised among other excellent bakers is such an honour.”
The pie makers, on Babylon Lane, won a gold award for their steak puddings in 2011.
