FEATURE WEDDING: Groom's surprise announcement to guests during wedding speech

He’d researched ‘romantic places in Riga’ online before the trip without much luck, so was banking on finding some inspiration during a walking tour with Jacqueline Miller.

“I’d bought the ring ready to propose, and I’d booked a nice restaurant for the evening,” he explains. “But I also took the ring on a walking tour during the day in case somewhere nice appeared.

“At the start of the tour the guide told us that we were going through a pick-pocket area which made me panic a bit!

“And on one part of the tour, we sat down and Jacqui leant on me with her elbow on the ring box, although she was completely unaware.

“The tour finished in a beautiful park in the centre of Riga; the sun was shining, flowers were in bloom and there was a beautiful backdrop of fountains.

“I dropped to one knee and fortunately she said yes.”

Peter, from Preston, a teacher and director of sixth form at Turton School in Bolton, met Jacqueline, from Blackburn, a children’s nurse at Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley, on a dating website, and the pair enjoyed a first date at a tea shop.

Their love of seeing the world was reflected in their travel-themed wedding at Marsh Farm Hall in Great Eccleston, Preston, on September 19.

The cake was a suitcase, the seating plan was a map of the world, there was a tipi for afternoon tea and a hog roast for the evening.

And the newlyweds, who live in Preston, had a special surprise in store for guests.

Peter says: “During my speech, I announced that Jacqui is expecting our first child, due in April.”

The couple jetted off on their honeymoon to Florida and the Bahamas.
