Crews spent the night at the scene of the blaze at Total Polyfilm on the Walton Summit Industrial Estate near Bamber Bridge and were still using an aerial ladder platform to pour water onto the smouldering wreckage this morning.

An investigation into what caused the fire in the early hours of Wednesday is being hampered by the dangerous state of the building.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “The building is very unsafe and collapsing inwards. So we can’t enter it to fully extinguish the seat of the fire, or to investigate what caused it.

“It is still a case of using an aerial ladder platform to pour water on it from above to cool things down and to make sure the piles of plastic which are still buring are extinguished.

“Obviously there has been a lot of damage to the building. A station manager is liaising with building inspectors and representatives of the company to look at how we get it into a safe state.”
