Dozens of firefighters are tackling a “significant” moorland blaze on Winter Hill.

A passing pilot raised the alarm at 3.55pm on Thursday, and the blaze is believed to be about a mile away from George’s Lane, Horwich.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the area affected measures approximately 1km by 500m, but its proximity to the hill’s telecommunication masts is not known.Firefighters, who have also been drafted in from Manchester, are using beaters and special leaf-blowers to tackle the flames, as well as trying to create breaks to stop the burning.

Winter Hill is located on Rivington Moor, Chorley, bordering the boroughs of Chorley, Blackburn with Darwen and Bolton.
