This year’s event is billed to be bigger than ever and will include dog agility, arts and crafts and horse riding.

In Preston, Armed Forces Day is expected to attract thousands to the city, and has been planned to coincide with the Kings Royal Hussars homecoming parade.

And Sunday will see the last day of Preston’s Guild City Games, which will include dragon boat racing at the docks, as well as a medal ceremony. Coun Drew Gale, organiser of Preston’s Armed Forces Day celebrations, said the event would be “spectacular”.

He said: “We expect thousands to attend and show their appreciation and affection for the wonderful men and women who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

“There will be displays, stalls, army vehicles, not least a Challenger 2 tank and a Spitfire on the ground.

“There are singers, a strong man competition, we have a Dakota flyover, and the second annual Tribute to the Troops PCW wrestling show, featuring former WWE superstars Dudley Boyz, among others.

“To top it all off, we have a charity concert in the evening, headlined by Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro.” He said there was still a small number of tickets left for the concert.

Also planned for this weekend is the Farington Park Fun Day and the Adlington Carnival.
