Key road is still shut for repairs to sewer

A road will remain closed next week for emergency sewer work.

The A49 Preston Road, between Coppull and Standish, was shut on January 27 when United Utilities workers found a sewer had collapsed.

It affected the whole carriageway, so Preston Road had to be closed between the junction of Pepper Lane and The Olive Garden restaurant, in Standish, for repairs that were initially expected to take up to 10 days.

A spokesman for United Utilities said: “The work is unfortunately going to continue into next week.

“We carried out the original repair on the sewer pipe as planned, but then had to deal with two further bursts and have now discovered a blockage.

“The work is really difficult for our engineers because this is a 700m-long underground pipe with no manholes along its length we can use to get to the sewer to have a proper look at it. We need to dig down to see what’s happening, which takes time to do and then repair.

“We appreciate people are frustrated with this route being closed, but please bear with us and we will get the work finished as quickly as possible so the road is safe for everyone to use.”
