A man has pleaded guilty to carrying out illegal tooth whitening after four people suffered burning and blisters.

Craig Dean, 41, of Ayrshire Close, Buckshaw Village, admitted unlawfully practising dentistry and unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry when he appeared at Preston Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

On December 2, he carried out tooth whitening treatment on two adults and two children, aged 17 and 18, at their home in Wigan.

All four people suffered burning and blistering to their mouths following the treatment.

Dean was prosecuted by the General Dental Council , which said he had never been registered with them.

By law, tooth whitening must only be carried out by registered dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists and clinical dental technicians working to the prescription of a dentist.

Dean received a 12-month conditional discharge. He must pay £120 compensation to each victim, a £15 victim surcharge and costs of £981.32.
