A 20-year-old local man has been arrested after a schoolgirl was “inappropriately touched” as she walked home.

Police, who are treating the incident as indecent assault, said the 15-year-old girl was left “very distressed”.

It happened at around 3.20pm yesterday.

The girl was walking along a footpath through woods at Lower Burgh Way, Chorley.

The man touched her over her clothing, said police.

When the girl challenged the man, he ran off, but was found and arrested a short time later.

The girl rang the police on her mobile phone.

Inspector Dave Robinson, of Chorley Police, said: “A man is in custody helping with inquiries.”

He said officers, neighbourhood officers, a dog handler and the police helicopter were all involved in the search for the man.

The man was eventually tracked down by the police dog.

He is currently in custody. No charges have been made.

Inspector Robinson said police had spoken to the girl’s school.

He said: “She’s very distressed.

“When she rang us, thankfully after a search of the vicinity, we were able to locate the man very quickly.”

He issued a safety warning to young women to take care following the incident.

“Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity,” he said.
