Man charged after Fishergate Centre incendiary attack

A 24-year-old man was due to appear in court today accused of making the incendiary device which triggered a huge security alert in Preston earlier this month.

David Rutherford, of Barry Avenue, Ingol, Preston was charged last night with making an explosive with intent to endanger life, injure or damage property.

Rutherford is the second of two men to be arrested in connection with the incident which led to the closure of the Fishergate Centre for nine hours on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

A 27-year-old, also from Preston, was later released on police bail until January 28 pending further enquiries.

A police spokesman said: “At this stage there is not thought to be any connection between the two men.”

Rutherford was due to appear at the city’s Magistrates Court this morning.
