PASSENGERS are set for futher train delays between Bolton and Manchester after the complex project to enable electric trains to run has been delayed by two months.
Network rail engineers are enlarging the Farnworth Tunnel but due to exceptionally poor ground conditions, work which was due to finish on October 4 will now run until possibly December.
The delay means rail passengers at Bolton, Preston, Blackpool and Clitheroe could see reduced timetables travelling towards Manchester.
The work extension is due to exceptionally poor ground conditions and unforeseen running sands which the machine has come across during boring. This is slowing the excavation speed and creating voids which need filled before boring can safely continue.
There are plans to lengthen platforms along the route to allow trains with more carriages to run during the work.
