SAFETY fears are being addressed at a village train station.

After years of campaigning, residents and councillors have won their battle with Northern Rail to have lights installed on the Preston bound platform at Adlington train station.

It comes after a number of concerns were raised to the rail firm over the poor lighting at the station.

The station will undergo further upgrades as customer information systems will also be installed.

Both the lights and systems are expected to be installed by the end of the year.

County Coun Kim Snape said: “I’m delighted that Northern Rail have made the decision upgrades.

“It’s been hard for residents, the ticket office is only open a few days a week and the lack of lights has been a real problem for a few years now.

“Hopefully this will encourage more people to use the facilities.”

A Northern Rail spokesman added: “The new customer information screens will keep people up-to-date with information about arrival and departure times as well as station calling points along the route. We have full funded these for our customers.

“Better lighting is also being delivered at the stations which will improve the overall station environment and customer peace of mind.”
