Not too late to sign up to Rosemere's Walk in the Dark from Chorley to Preston

Seven-year-old Faye Keeney, of Ribbleton, is hoping to raise around £450 in sponsorship by staying the course this Saturday (April 28), from 9pm.

The walk is the charity’s annual 11-mile fundraising trek along the A6 from Chorley & South Ribble Hospital to Rosemere Cancer Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The Fulwood’s St Clare’s Catholic Primary School pupil will be walking alongside mum Lindsay Kellett, 32, an assistant practitioner in radiotherapy at the cancer centre.

Back in 2016, Lindsay found her dad, Paul Kellett, 62, also of Ribbleton, among patients in the radiotherapy waiting room following his diagnosis of lung cancer. In 2007, her mum Christine Kellett, also 62, was treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre for breast cancer and currently, her cousin Penny Ferguson, 53, of Ashton, is also undergoing breast cancer treatment there. Lindsay said: “My parents are both doing great now. My cousin is just coming to the end of her treatment and is doing well.

“Faye really wanted to take part in Walk in the Dark as a thank you for the care and treatment our family has received at Rosemere Cancer Centre, especially grandad because she remembers when he wasn’t well. I’m confident Faye will manage to walk the whole way. We’ve been on a couple of good practice walks after school and she’s so excited about staying up and being part of the event. She’s also been sponsored by some of her teachers and knows to get the money, she has to finish.”

This year’s Walk in the Dark is the charity’s 10th. Over the last decade, 2,300 people have taken part, collectively raising just short of £250,000.

Walton Summit-based construction company Eric Wright Group is the walk’s 2018 sponsor.

It is still not too late to enter. Entry is currently £10 per person and free for under 12s. Dogs are also welcome. A donation of £20 is requested. Walkers are invited to dress up and display the name of loved ones they may be walking in memory of.

All entrants receive a goody bag at the start of the walk and are welcomed at the finish with brews and bacon barms.
