Tributes to late mum of hero Marine Paul Warren

The mother of a Lancashire Royal Marine who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 has died after batttling cancer for more than a year.

Lynn Warren, 59, of Leyland, passed away in St Catherine’s Hospice, Lostock Hall, on Saturday.

Her son, Paul Warren, 23, who was serving with Charlie Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines, was killed in Afghanistan in June, 2010. He suffered fatal injuries in an explosion when Patrol Base Airport Lounge was attacked by insurgents.

Lynn’s husband Cliff said the same Union flag used to drape Paul’s coffin will also be placed on Lynn’s. And there will be a guard of honour by members of the Royal Marines Association.

Lynn, who worked as a carer, died from ovarian cancer, with which she was diagnosed in September 2019. Cliff, a retired RAC patrolman, from Manchester, said she and Paul were “very close”.

Regarding his son’s death, he added: “She had to be strong for me. She was devastated. I was the one that fell to pieces.”

Cliff said Lynn was dedicated to her job - and caring for others. “She would never be off sick,” he said. “Everybody loved her going. She loved caring for other people and making their lives a bit easier.”

He added: “She was loving and straightforward.She was a fantastic wife and mother.”

Cliff put out a message about his wife’s death on the Leyland Memories public Facebook group. He wrote: “To those who can remember or attended our son’s military funeral in June 2010, - Marine Paul Warren at Saint Andrews, Lynn showed all the true fighting spirit of a Royal Marines Mum.”

Lynn’s funeral at St Andrew’s Parish Church, Leyland, on February 11, at 10am - will take the same route as Paul’s. After the service she will be taken to Charnock Richard Crematorium. Covid restrictions will apply.
