Wildlife in focus as Chorley photography competition returns this year

Local wildlife enthusiasts are being encouraged to get out their cameras – as the Chorley Flower Show’s Photography Competition returns for 2021.

The popular snapshot contest has been officially launched, with winners to be decided by a public vote in July.

The competition is again split into four categories; abstract and close-ups, garden wildlife, wildflowers, and a special young photographer section for under 16s.

Last year’s winning entries included stunning images of hedgehogs, waterdrops and wildflowers.

Councillor Peter Wilson, Deputy Leader of Chorley Council, said: “I am delighted to announce that the Chorley Flower Show’s Photography Competition is returning.

“I am sure most of us are looking forward to getting out and visiting our local green spaces more once the current lockdown ends and restrictions are gradually eased, so why not take along your camera or smartphone and keep an eye out for something extraordinary where you live?

“You don’t have to leave home to take part, however. Some of the very best pictures from last year’s competition – including some of the winning entries - were taken in the photographers’ own gardens.

“We had some truly wonderful entries last year despite all the restrictions related to the pandemic, and I am really looking forward to seeing what the people of Chorley come up with this year. Good luck!”

Members of the public have until Friday, July 18, to submit their shots.

They can be emailed via WeTransfer to [email protected] or posted on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #ChorleyFlowerShow2021.

Entries should include the photographer’s name and the location of where their photo was taken.

A judging panel will then decide a shortlist of the best pictures in each category, with the winners decided by a public vote on Facebook.

Winning entrants will win a wristband to next year’s Chorley Flower Show or, in the case of under 16s, a seed/plant selection.

They will also have their photos included in the 2022 show programme and used to publicise next year’s show, where they will be put on display.

Only high-quality digital images in JPEG format are eligible.

Photographs must not be modified in any way, although subtle sharpening and colour balance is permitted.

Under 16s can enter any of the three main categories and are allowed a maximum of one submission per category.

It is still hoped this year’s Chorley Flower Show will be able to go ahead as planned on the weekend of 31 July – 1 August, subject to COVID-19 restrictions at the time.
