Mr Cameron flew in by helicopter to police headquarters at Hutton and was driven to Croston where residents are still trying to put their lives back together after their village was inundated when the nearby River Douglas burst its banks.

Accompanied by South Ribble MP Seema Kennedy, he walked out across boggy farmland to see at first hand the repair work which has been carried out on a huge breach in flood defences.

“I was very keen to come here because obviously there have been a lot of visits during the crisis period by ministers, but I wanted to come here now and see the ongoing operations to try and build the resilience and put in place better flood protection,” he told the Evening Post.

“There are always lessons to learn. But I sense this time that the Environment Agency were very quickly off the mark, we brought the military in faster with the Chinook (helicopter) that dropped sandbags.

“The Government schemes to pay out money to households and businesses have worked more rapidly. But there is a lot more to do.”

After more than an hour at Croston Mr Cameron was driven back to Hutton before flying off to visit affected areas in the Lake District and then on to Scotland.
