Flying high - the desperate football fans claiming Trump victory

Football doesn't normally fly with politics - especially the American kind.

But it seems that while the US Presidential election is up in the air, the beautiful game is having a laugh.

Take the Southampton staff who, when their club briefly went top of the Premiership last night, took to Twitter to demand: "Stop The Count" - a buzz phrase coined for the incumbent President nervously looking over his shoulder at Democratic candidate Joe Biden catching him up in the polls

And now a group of fans have trumped that by flying a banner over Goodison Park for today's match between Everton and Manchester United declaring: "World Knows Trump Won #MAGA" (Make America Great Again).

No-one knows who was responsible, although the finger of suspicion is pointing in the direction of Blackpool Airport where aircraft-drawn banners have previously sparked controversy after being unfurled over Preston North End's Deepdale Stadium and more recently Burnley's Turf Moor.

Residents seeing the Trump banner flown across Lancashire's skies today expressed their disbelief on social media.

Dave Burnell in Clayton-le-Woods wrote: "Someone has actually paid for that to fly over Chorley, England. Not sure we're your target audience mate."

One on Merseyside posted: "A plane with a banner proclaiming 'World Knows Trump Won #MAGA' has just flown over Waterloo. I tried to get a picture but couldn't ficus for laughing."

And another wrote: "OK, who flew the Trump banner over Blackpool?"
