Work is underway on building a new drive-thru KFC outlet in Buckshaw Village. Steelwork on the development, which will also includes three business units, has gone up on the structure in Barnes Wallis Way.

What’s the background?

In August 2017, KFC applied for permission to open the restaurant, saying it would bring 35 jobs to the area.

More than 40 letters of objection were received by Chorley Borough Council, with residents concerned about the location of the outlet.

Speaking at the time, Councillor Mark Perks said: “A fast food takeaway opposite a school isn’t appropriate. It’s encouraging people to eat unhealthily.” Despite objections, plans were passed in March.

What do they say?

Councillor Aidy Riggott said he has asked Chorley Council to look into a policy on how close food outlets and advertising can be to schools.

Preston Council stipulates takeaways within 400 metres of a secondary school are not to open before 5pm.

He said: “I think the next real concerns will be over traffic and litter on the site, and whether there are appropriate plans to deal with that.” KFC were approached for a comment, but did not respond.

A KFC spokesperson said: “Our Buckshaw Village drive-thru restaurant is coming to town in early March and we can’t wait to welcome KFC fans. It will create 35 jobs in the local area and anyone wishing to join our team should keep their eyes peeled on our careers page - kfc.co.uk/careers - for future opportunities.’’
