Remembrance parades and services must not only be for two world wars says charity

The Royal British Legion is this year challenging the commonly held view that the annual Remembrance services are only for those killed in two world wars.

“Whilst it is important these conflicts and those who served in them will always be remembered, the Legion is urging the public to recognise the service and sacrifice made across all generations of the British Armed Forces including the most recent conflicts,” said a spokesman.

Dozens of services will be held across the county to pay homage to service personnel who have given their lives over the past century.

One of the biggest will be in Preston where a military procession will leave the covered markets at 10.35am and march around Lancaster Road, Church Street, Cheapside and into the Flag market for a service at the city’s war memorial.

Roads in the city centre will be closed between 9am and 1pm. Mayor Coun John Collins said: “The traditional procession for Remembrance Sunday is always very well attended in Preston.”

In South Ribble Mayor Coun Linda Woollard is hoping for a record turnout for the parade, which leaves the Civic Centre at 10.40am for a service and wreath-laying at the war memorial.

“I’m always moved by the Remembrance service and I think it’s important for us all, whatever our age, to reflect on the sacrifice so many servicemen and women have made in conflicts around the world.

“Let’s also remember all the family and friends who have lost a loved one in the course of their duty.”

Chorley will also have a parade and service at the war memorial in Astley Park which commemorates the town’s 738 war dead including six who were killed since the Second World War.

Other Remembrance Sunday services include Longridge, Broughton, Lancaster, Morecambe, Adlington, Hutton, Penwortham, Ormskirk, Garstang, Bilsborrow, Chipping, Tarleton, Rufford, Burscough, Croston, Mawdesley and Freckleton.
