Council bosses have allayed fears that Chorley’s historic Big Lamp will be replaced.

A planning application, was submitted by Asda Stores Limited to “replace”Chorley’s Big Lamp with a school bell.

However it is understood that the Big Lamp will now be located outside Marshall’s Florist and the school bell will be on the Asda site.

In the early days of the plans the Big Lamp was due to be part of the Asda site, however because of the revamp of Market Street, the Big Lamp was moved.

Asda was left with an area of land and after consulting with a community group it was agreed a bell would go in place of the Big Lamp.

A spokesman from Asda said: “Lancashire County Council is currently undertaking works to improve the highways on Market Street – these improvements have been designed by the council and are being implemented by contractors on their behalf.”

The planning application, which is available to view on Chorley Council’s planning portal sparked outrage on the well-known Facebook group Chorley then and Now with more than 70 comments on the thread.

One member said: “The problem with the bell/big lamp question is the word “replace” in both the application and the covering letter.

“The only assurance I will accept is a letter stating that the Big Lamp will be located in the position stated in the original application signed by the developers.”

A school bell will be built in the vicinity of the building as the new Asda store is being built on the site of the former St George’s school and it will be placed in the area before the opening.

Coun Peter Wilson, deputy leader of Chorley Council, said: “We were approached by a community group with the idea of a school bell to recognise the history of the area as the new Asda is being built on the site of the old National School and the former St George’s School.

“So Asda has now submitted an application for it.

“However, if the application is approved, the bell would be in addition to the Big Lamp which is being reinstated on the junction.”
